Global Affairs Canada (GAC) has just released the following announcement, “Canada is proud to top up its contribution to the Mozambique Canada Maternal Health Project by $390,000 to support the COVID-19 response. The project will continue to focus on maternal and newborn health by raising awareness on COVID-19 prevention and counter the differential impacts the pandemic has on women and girls through accurate and empowering information and messages. Efforts will focus on providing medical, protective equipment and training in health facilities to strengthen health workers’ skills in dealing with the pandemic. At the community level, activities will remain on empowering women and girls to make informed decisions about their personal health and maternal and reproductive health needs linked to COVID-19.”
In response to this announcement Nazeem Muhajarine, Principal Investigator, Mozambique Canada Maternal Health Project stated, “This additional funding from Global Affairs is very helpful as we work with our provincial health partner in Inhambane to strengthen their capacity to do testing and tracing, procure PPE, and enhance education and information campaigns to stem the spread of the virus.”
Nazeem Muhajarine further stated, “Global Affairs recognizes our readiness to move quickly to work with our provincial partner and communities to stem the spread of the virus and these additional funds are a testament to that.”
Project Director Jessie Forsyth, now in Inhambane Province, Mozambique said, “We are eager to do more in our communities and with our partners in health, to respond to the challenges of COVID-19 in Inhambane. Thanks to GAC for this opportunity to strengthen prevention efforts and safeguard women’s sexual, reproductive and maternal health during the pandemic.”
